Should my business reply to every Google review?

By PresenceOK · Updated October 26, 2026

Yes. Reply to every Google review, positive and negative, and make each reply specific to what the customer wrote. Google says replying shows customers you value their feedback, and in BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey, 89% of consumers said they expect business owners to respond to reviews, and 80% said they're likely to use a business that responds to all of its reviews.

What Google says

Google's own Business Profile help page on local ranking tells owners to respond to reviews: "When you reply to customer reviews, it shows that you value their feedback." The same page says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that "more reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking." Google does not say that replies by themselves raise your ranking, so be wary of anyone who promises that. (Google Business Profile Help)

What customers say

From BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 (1,002 US adults, published February 2026):

The survey asked about local businesses in general, so it applies whether you run a restaurant, a salon, a gym or a repair shop. (BrightLocal)

How to reply to a good review

  1. Thank them by first name.
  2. Mention one specific thing they said: the dish, the stylist, the repair, the turnaround.
  3. Keep it to two or three sentences.
  4. Don't add a sales pitch or a list of keywords.

Example (salon): "Thanks, Dana! So glad you love the cut. Marcus will be happy to hear it. See you in six weeks."

Example (auto shop): "Thanks, Dana! Glad we could track down that check engine light and have the car back to you the same afternoon. Tell Marcus we said hi next time you're in."

How to reply to a bad review

  1. Stay calm and keep it short. Future customers are reading, not just the reviewer.
  2. Thank them and acknowledge the frustration without arguing.
  3. Don't share job details, prices or anything private about the customer. For health and dental offices, never confirm the person is a patient.
  4. Invite them to contact you directly so you can look into it.

Example: "Thanks for letting us know, Mike. That's not the visit we want anyone to have. Please call or stop by and ask for the manager so we can look into it with you."

What about star-only reviews?

Reply to those too. A short "Thanks for the 5 stars, we appreciate you choosing us" is enough. It tells the next person reading that someone is paying attention.

FAQ

Do I need to reply to 5-star reviews with no text?

It's a good idea. A one-line thank-you is enough, and it shows the profile is looked after.

How fast should I reply to a Google review?

Within a day is a good target. In BrightLocal's 2026 survey, 32% of consumers expect a reply by the next day and 81% within a week.

Can I use the same reply for every review?

Avoid it. In the same survey, 50% of consumers said templated or generic replies make them unlikely to choose a business. Mention something the customer actually said.

Will replying to reviews improve my Google ranking?

Google doesn't say replies alone improve ranking. It says replies show you value feedback, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking.

Should I ask Google to remove a bad review?

Only if it breaks Google's policies, such as spam, off-topic content or a conflict of interest. Honest negative reviews stay up, so a calm reply is your best tool.
